WoW Classic: How Many Players Had?

World of Warcraft was released in 2004, and despite its many years, the game still has a loyal group of players. Even more thanks to the regular content updates such as WoW Classic. These updates are the perfect excuse to revisit this complex and big virtual world. However, how many people are still playing World of Warcraft?

Sadly, we can have a definitive answer, because Blizzard is the only one who has access to the official player count. 2015 was the last time when the company released information about their player base, for that moment, World of Warcraft had an impressive total of 5.6 million subscribers across the globe.

However, a lot of things and updates have happened since then. Now World of Warcraft is very different, mainly thanks to WoW Classic. For that reason, we can be 100% accurate with the number of players active in WoW. Third-party statistics may help us with our objective.

Statista suggests that World of Warcraft’s player count is around 4.88 million as of 2020. They also suggest that it is going down at a rate of roughly 140,000 players per year. This decrease may change soon thanks to the Shadowlands expansion.

For example, in 2019, WoW Classic managed to nearly double World of Warcraft’s player base and became an instant sensation directly after release. This could happen with Shadowlands expansion too.

We think that the most important thing is that Blizzard does all they can to keep the game fresh for veteran players. Because any kind of expansion only keeps new players in for a few months, after that the remaining players are the hardcore. So, the actual 4.8 million players that still play World of Warcraft need more content if they are to keep coming back.
